The Constitutional Council of Sri Lanka has unanimously approved Supreme Court Justice Preethi Padman Surasena as the next Chief Justice, parliamentary sources said.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake recently submitted Justice Surasena’s name to the Constitutional Council, and it was approved at the Council meeting held yesterday (23).
The current Chief Justice, Murdu Fernando, is scheduled to retire on the 27th of this month.
Justice Preethi Padman Surasena is one of the senior-most judges on the Supreme Court bench. He has previously served as a member of the Judicial Service Commission and has presided over several high-profile cases. He also chaired the Parliamentary Committee that investigated allegations against suspended IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon.
