The prelates of the main Buddhist chapters have unanimously called on the President to refrain from enforcing the 13th Amendment to the Constitution in its full force.
.When the President visited Malwatu Asgiri Maha Vihara this morning to pay homage to the prelates, a memorandum denouncing any move by the government to enforce the 13th amendment to the constitution was handed over to the President with their signatures and insignia.
The memorandum emphasized that the 13th constitutional amendment, which causes serious problems in respect of the country’s independence, territorial integrity, and national security, should not be enforced at all.
Though there could be heightened influence from external forces to arrive at an agreement in order to obtain their support to overcome the economic crisis in the country, the Maha Sangha emphasizes that such proposals that endanger the independence and territorial integrity of the country should be rejected forthwith.
The prelates informed the president that the leaders in the past refrained from doing so out of awareness of the possible danger to the country.
