Boossa in the process of being converted to high-security prison

For the past two weeks, Boossa prison is being fortified and its security beefed up according to Prisons Officials. The decision to increase the security at the Prison and others around the country was taken after early this month President Gotabaya Rajapaksa vowed to overhaul the prison systems in Sri Lanka to eradicate the criminal underworld.

Accordingly, Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya said that Boossa has been elected to become a high-security prison.  The prison is now being secured with the help of the Sri Lanka Navy. According to sources sailors from SLNS Nipuna in Boossa have been deployed to secure cells of inmates and other areas to ensure they are unable to hideaway unauthorized equipment.

Meanwhile, 100 STF personnel has also been deployed to handle the external security of the prison. New mobile phone jammers have also been put up to ensure calls cannot be placed through any mobile phone device from within the prison.

In early June raids were also conducted by the Police Special Task Force (STF) within the Boossa prison following the announcement where they found several unauthorized types of equipment including mobile phones in the prison cell of infamous underworld figure ‘Kanjipani Imran’.
