Black July commemoration held in Jaffna University

Lamps and candles were lit at the University of Jaffna yesterday evening (23) to mark the 37th anniversary of the Black July anti Tamil pogrom and riots which took place in 1983.

The event was organized by the Jaffna University Student’s Union and was followed by a two-minute silence after lighting candles and lamps in memory of the Tamil people ​​who died in Black July riots.

Black July is generally seen as the start of the Sri Lankan War between the Tamil Tigers and the government. Riots against Tamils spread across the country after 13 government soldiers were killed in Jaffna by the LTTE on 23 July, 1983.
