Audit Reveals Government Paid 69 Million Rupees Annual Rent for MPs’ Housing

  

According to the National Audit Office, the government annually paid a rent of 69 million rupees for 101 housing units in Pannipitiya Vira mawatha allocated for Members of Parliament. The payment was made to the Urban Development Authority.

The audit further uncovered that an additional 10 million rupees should have been remitted to the Urban Development Authority by August 2023. This amount was intended to cover maintenance costs borne by each house owner and expenses related to electricity, gas, and water charges for the housing units.

The allocation of 101 housing units for Members of Parliament was made in accordance with Cabinet decision No. 22/0970/502/019, dated July 16, 2022, as part of a 500-house housing project located in Pannipitiya Viramawate.

The annual audit report for the year 2022 highlighted these financial transactions, shedding light on the government’s expenditure related to parliamentary housing.
