According to the National Audit Office, in the year 2022, 53% of the prison population, totaling 13,794 inmates, were incarcerated for drug-related offenses.
This marks a significant proportion of the 26,176 individuals imprisoned during the same period, with 4,406 detainees specifically charged with drug-related activities and 9,388 as suspects.
The increase in overall criminal activities across the country has been attributed to the rise in drug abuse, trafficking, and sales. The audit report highlights that the primary objective of the prison system has been hindered primarily due to drug-related misconduct.
