Are elephants at the risk of Covid 19?

Veterinarian Asoka Dangolla says that although there are rumors circulating in the society about the possibility of elephants being infected with the Covid 19 virus during the Perahera it is not possible to make a definite statement in this regard.

Although it has been confirmed that some animals have been infected with the Covid 19 virus it has not been confirmed that elephants have been infected so far, Dr. Dangolla said.

According to the doctor, the Covid 19 virus is just another type of coronavirus, and the virus can be seen to spread in various forms. He also said there have been no confirmed reports from even other countries that elephants can be infected with Covid 19 just as they can be infected with tuberculosis.

Sixty elephants are scheduled to participate in the Kandy Esala Perahera this year
