Another reason for SLPP to drag its feet on the 21st amendment

The SLPP will only support the 21st amendment if the proposed legislation envisages abolishing the executive Presidency. Former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse said.

If the Presidency is to remain, and if the 21st amendment does not serve any purpose to the country, the SLPP will not support the 21st amendment, he said.

Addressing a group of SLPP activists, the former Prime Minister said that the immediate resolution of the people is not the 21st amendment but handling the problems they face effectively.

However, he said if the objective is to strengthen Parliament through the proposed legislation and if this is possible to serve the people with vigour, that was their objective and not to support an empty piece of legislation. He added.

If the objective is to assign the power of the executive to a powerless Prime Minister, we will not support it, he added.
