Contrary to reports in some mainstream media suggesting that underworld figure Rotambe Amila had masterminded the killing of Midigama Lasa, alias Lasantha Wickramasekera, it has now been confirmed that Amila remains in the custody of Russian security authorities.
Amila was apprehended by Russian law enforcement in March this year after it was discovered that he had entered the country using a forged visa. The arrest also brought to light an active red warrant issued against him by Interpol.
Following his detention, Russian authorities filed a case against Amila under the country’s Immigration and Emigration Act. Legal proceedings are currently underway and are expected to conclude within a month.
According to Sri Lankan investigation units, the necessary diplomatic and legal documentation for Amila’s extradition has already been finalised. He is expected to be brought back to Sri Lanka immediately after the Russian court delivers its verdict on the pending case.
