There are reports suggesting the implementation of a political plan aimed at diminishing the status of Sri Lankan cricket to a level below that of Zimbabwe. According to reports to Lankasara, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Jeevan Mendis, both residing in Australia, are supposedly being recruited as coaches in the high technology department of cricket for substantial salaries.
Notably, both Dilshan and Mendis were strong supporters of Mahinda Rajapaksa and Namal Rajapaksa in the last elections. Jeevan Mendis is said to be Namal’s classmate at St. Thomas College. Dilshan, at one point, expressed readiness to initiate a cricket club in Hambantota for Namal and played a significant role in during the general election.
Several other former players from Hambantota, who campaigned for Namal in the last general election, are expected to be recruited to various positions in the training department. It is reported that these players are currently running training academies for young children in Australia with reportedly low participation.
Shammi Silva, a supporter of Namal Rajapaksa, is mentioned in the context, as is Harin Fernando, who is known as an active figure. The appointment of Dasun Shanaka as the captain for the World Cup tournament and the involvement of Zimbabwe in the tournament with the assistance of Namal Rajapaksa are highlighted.
The third Twenty20 match between Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka, crucial for the ongoing series, is scheduled to take place at Khettarama Stadium. After Sri Lanka’s defeat in the second match, some spectators reportedly expressed their displeasure by throwing objects into the stadium.
In a related note, the Afghan team, set to come to Sri Lanka next month, engaged in a spirited match against the strong Indian team in India, resulting in a close contest.
