The appointment of the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) is illegal under the 19th constitution, MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake said in Parliament today.
Commenting at length on the debate on the 20th Amendment to the Constitution today, MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated that the appointment of the IGP should be approved by the Legislative Council in accordance with Article 19 of the Constitution.
However, he pointed out that the acting IGP could only be appointed for two weeks and that if he was to be reinstated, it would have to be approved by the Legislative Council on the recommendation of the President.
MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated that this post is illegal as no such thing has happened in the recent past.
He further said that there is a tendency in the past to appoint acting persons to such crucial posts and the question arises as to whether such acting posts are given to get personal things done.
The rights introduced to the country by the 19th amendment to the constitution have been removed by the 20th amendment, said MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
