An Indian national was arrested by the Customs at the Katunayake International Airport this morning (May 5) for attempting to smuggle over Rs. 40 million worth of foreign currency consisted with Canadian Dollars and Euros in his luggage to, India.
The Chennai bound Indian national was a 45-year-old businessman customs said.
He was on his way to Chennai on an Indigo flight E1208 this morning (May 5) when he was spotted going to the toilet at the airport’s transit passenger terminal several times. The cash was found hidden in a bag.
During a search of the suspect’s luggage, customs officials found 117,000 Canadian dollars and 19,000 euros in cash.
The arrested Indian national was ordered to pay a fine of Rs. 10,000 after confiscating the stock of foreign currency .
