Fears of a second wave! 57 at Kandakadu test positive for Covid 19

Fears of a second wave of Coronavirus in the country have emerged after it was confirmed today that 57 persons from the Kandakadu drug rehabilitation center have tested positive for the virus.  Among the 57 positive cases is a female counselor working at the center.

She has been identified as a resident of Marawila and had been traveling to work from home. Health officials are therefore now having concerns if this has caused a community spread. 450 inmates and staffers at the center had undergone PCR tests recently.

The detections happened after PCR tests were performed at the center, following one of its former inmates testing positive for the virus after he was transferred to the Welikada Prison on June 27. While the latest numbers have led to the increase of Covid 19 patients in the country to 2151 it is still unclear as to how the Welikada prison inmate contracted Covid 19 while at Kandakadu.

Authorities are also scrambling after it was reported that close to 100 inmates from the Welikada war housing the Covid 19 positive patient had been released and gone home. However, prison officials claimed that no other positive cases have been found within the Welikada prison after PCR tests were performed on them.
