The police announced that 11 candidates contesting in the General Election have been arrested, along with 353 supporters, for violating election laws. According to a media statement by Deputy Inspector General of Police Nihal Talduwa, those arrested face charges for distributing pamphlets, displaying posters and banners, and causing disturbances at police stations in attempts to free detained supporters.

This morning at around 9:00 am, four members of the Sarvajana Balaya Party were detained in the Polonnaruwa New Town area for putting up posters. The individuals, aged between 45 and 50, are residents of the same area. Standard legal proceedings are underway, and police have confirmed that none of the four detainees have been granted bail. The police investigation is ongoing, with necessary actions being taken.

In addition, today marks the conclusion of postal voting for the election. In response to a request from the Election Commission, the Ministry of Education has decided to close all schools on the island on the 13th and 14th of this month.
