Senior Journalist Bandula Jayasekara appeals for help

Senior journalist Bandula Jayasekara, who has been diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome, a type of blood cancer, has issued a public appeal for financial assistance to undergo a lifesaving medical procedure in Singapore.

A bone marrow transplant to save the life of the journalist was scheduled to be held in Singapore as it was not possible to carry out the surgery in Sri Lanka. However, due to the Covid 19 pandemic the transplant had to be delayed.

Jayasekara is currently undergoing chemotherapy, blood, and platelet transfusions. He has suffered various setbacks in his fight to become a cancer survivor. Frequent hospitalization with infections has resulted in him incurring high medical costs in his battle against cancer. Further delays in accessing vital treatment (transplant) may increase his risk of mortality.

He said the National University Cancer Institute of Singapore has estimated the cost to be SGD 220,000 (approximately Rs. 30 million).
