Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith today said that the conclusion of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into the Easter Attack says Easter Sunday attacks were carried aiming a creating unrest in the country to ensure the victory of a candidate who promised to ensure the country’s security in the 2019 presidential election.

Archbishop further said that one of the plans was to create ethnic strife, adding that he was confident that all those involved in the Easter attack would be punished soon.

He was addressing a special function at St. Anthony’s Church in Kochchikade today (21), to mark the third anniversary of the series of terrorist attacks on Easter Sunday bombings.

The Cardinal pointed out that although former President Maithripala Sirisena knew about the explosives found in Wanathawilluwa, he had not inquired from the Security Council.

The cardinal also said that although some officials had called on the former president to arrest Saharan Hashim and his group, his irresponsible behavior had been a major factor in the series of attacks.

Cardinal Ranjith also condemned the ongoing investigation into the Easter attack.

“I believe that all those involved in the Easter attacks will soon have to face the consequences of their crimes.”
