A group of Jaffna fishermen’s union leaders held a three hour discussion with the Deputy Indian High Commissioner in Jaffna yesterday (22) and demanded a solution for the fishing invasion by the the Indian fishing folk community.

Fisheries leaders who met Deputy Indian High Commissioner Rakesh Natraj Jayabaskaran said that fishermen from the North had to face severe hardships due to the large number of Indian fishermen arriving in trawlers from India this week.

Jaffna Fishermen’s Association Chairman Annalingam Annarasa said that there were more than 1000 trawlers belonging to Indian fishermen in the North Sea on the 21st alone and only 700 to 800 trawlers were seen in one day earlier.

The fishermen had complained the Indian Deputy High Commissioner that they had damaged the nets of the fishermen in the North and had forcibly plundered the fish caught by the fishermen and fled.
