Dayasiri Jayasekara, the General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and the Kurunegala District candidate of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna said in Kurunegala yesterday that a man who has not even passed his grade 8 examinations and is in power has destroyed what even Arya Chakravarty did not when he came to Kurunegala.

Dayasiri Jayasekara was commenting on the recent destruction of an archeological site in Kurunegala built during the reign of King Buwanekabahu. The Mayor of Kurunegala had ordered the destruction of the building and Dayasiri has been critical of the appointment of a committee to look into the matter without arresting the mayor.

Speaking further Dayasiri Jayasekara said, “We are ready for a politics that will change the country. Read the history of this country. Find out our ancient information. Today it does not matter that the royal pavilion built by King Bhuvanekabahu was demolished. That it was raised to the ground. Is that a learned man who did this? Is it a man who has read about ruins? This is what happens when those who passed only the eight grade come into power. It was Arya Chakrawarthi who should have destroyed it if at all but he didn’t. The Portuguese didn’t destroy it, neither did the dutch. But the KurunegalaMayor has gone even beyond Arya Chakravarthi and destroyed this site. This is a crime. There is no point in appointing committees for this and carrying out investigations. He must be arrested and imprisoned, Dayasiri Jayasekara said.
