Senior medical experts warn the public not to use the drug Ivermectin since it had not been proven as a successful treatment against the Covid 19 virus. In a recent letter to the Director-General of Health Services, it was stated that Ivermectin should not be approved for use as a therapeutic medicine as there is currently no scientific evidence that it is appropriate to use it as a prophylaxis drug for the covid disease. It also states that there is no scientific evidence that drugs such as hydroxychloroquine, vitamin D, and vitamin C are effective in controlling and managing Covid disease.

Dr. Ananda Wijewickrama, a leading physician who is at the forefront of the Covid pandemic in the country, and 14 other experts have written this letter to the General Health Services. These experts say that a local study is currently being conducted to study this drug but it has not yet been approved but some people are accustomed to using it.
Ivermectin is a drug used to treat parasitic infections, especially in parasitic infections of animals. Merk, the patented manufacturer of the drug, also said in a recent press release that Ivermectin was a drug designed to treat animal parasites and that the company’s researchers were still researching whether it would work well against Covid 19.

The manufacturer also stated that it could not prescribe Covid until the results of the research were available.
Despite this, the demand for this drug has grown significantly in many parts of the world. In recent days, there have been more and more reports of people consuming tablets in the market, following a request from some consultants to import them into the country.

Meanwhile, the National Drug Regulatory Authority has also given permission to a pharmaceutical company owned by a high profile businessman who has a close association of the current government to import Ivermectin for emergency use.
