591 deaths while 21344 have been infected within the last 10 days – Health Minister shows the reality

The Minister of Health Pavithra Wanniarachchi stated in Parliament today that 21344 cases have been reported since July 25 and 591 deaths have occurred in the past 10 days. During last the 10 days, there were 134,179 PCR tests have done, showing an increase in the number of patients being treated in hospitals and treatment centres, up from 23,804 on July 23 to 300,17 on August 1.

Responding to a question raised by the Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa, the Minister said that 140 to 150 Intensive Care Units could be managed.

The Minister further said

“The past week has seen an increase in the number of Covid patients in Sri Lanka as well as globally in the Asian region. Although 1000 to 1500 are reported daily, the number has risen to between 2000 and 2500 in the last week.

In terms of vaccination, 86 percent of the population over the age of 30 has been given any first dose. 18 percent have completed the second dose of vaccination. Arrangements have been made for a single dose or injection over the age of 30 years. The second dose is also planned. He said.
