A Fundamental Rights petition was filed today (25) before the Supreme court seeking an order to direct the Police to arrest a former leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE)  Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan alias ‘Karuna Amman’. The Fr was filed by a civil rights activist over the recent controversial statement made by him.

At a recent election meeting held in Ampara, Karuna told the attendees that he was more dangerous than Covid 19 as he had killed over 2000 – 3000 government soldiers in Elephant pass.

The FR petition was filed by B. Kalahepathirana, a teacher by profession. Attorney General, Karuna Amman and Acting IGP were named in the FR as respondents.

In the petition, Kalahepathirana noted that the statement can be construed as a confession to the gruesome acts committed during Karuna’s tenure in the LTTE. The petitioner also pointed out that many other former LTTE members have been indicted for committing such crimes under the Penal Code and the Prevention of Terrorism Act and after a trial has been found guilty and has been punished by the Court of Law in Sri Lanka.

He was requested to be present before the CID on Tuesday after Acting IGP Wickramaratne ordered an investigation into the statement made by Karuna. However did not present himself and had instead informed the CID that he was unwell.  Karuna yesterday arrived at the CID around 11 am and left the premises after providing a statement for around seven hours.
