Administration of the Sputnik v vaccine received from Russia will commence today (06). Accordingly, the first dose of the vaccine will be given to the people in the Gothatuwa area in the Colombo District a health source said. The vaccine is planned to be given to about 7,500 people in the area.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Health told Lankasara that the vaccine will be given to people between the ages of 30 and 60 and the second vaccine will be given three weeks later. The first batch of 15,000 doses of the Sputnik vaccine approved by the National Drug Regulatory Authority arrived in Sri Lanka on the 4th and 13 million of these vaccines are expected to arrive in stages.
At present 925242 people in the country have been given the first dose of the Astrazeneca vaccine and only 356,000 doses are left in the country. Accordingly, there is a shortage of around 600,000 vaccines for the second dose and the current crisis in India has made it very difficult to procure these vaccines.
