Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka has said it was fair to promote the Army Commander Shavendra Silva to the rank of general. However Fonseka labelled the promotion given to current Defence Secreatry Kamal Gunaratne as a political promotion.
He said this responding to a question raised by a journalist at a special media briefing yesterday.
The Field Marshal said that he had suggested in Parliament and during the debate on the Ministry of Defense that Army Commanders should be promoted to the rank of four stars and then it would be very good to bring Army Commanders to the rank of three stars.
“But the promotion of Kamal Gunaratne to the rank of four star general is a political promotion. Such things have happened in this country. There are a large number of people who have obtained political promotions and retired as Major Generals. Kamal Gunaratne was given such a political promotion“ he said.
