Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) C.D. Wickramaratne has reportedly died by suicide after allegedly shooting himself at his residence in Athurugiriya.
He was rushed to the Mulleriyawa Hospital following the shooting this morning (17), where he was pronounced dead, hospital sources said.

Wickramaratne, who served in the Sri Lanka Police for more than 30 years, was the country’s 35th Inspector General of Police. Before assuming the top post, he served as the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of the Southern Province.
Following the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks in 2019, then IGP Pujith Jayasundara was placed on compulsory leave, and Wickremaratne was appointed as the Acting Inspector General of Police. He was subsequently confirmed as the IGP on 25 November 2020.
He holds the distinction of being the longest-serving Acting IGP in the history of the Sri Lanka Police, having served in that capacity for approximately one and a half years. He continued as the Inspector General of Police until his retirement on 25 November 2023.
