Police have discovered the body of a 23-year-old married woman who died under mysterious circumstances at a house in Warapitiya, Kundasale, Kandy.

The body was found inside a house believed to belong to the deceased woman’s husband.
Relatives of the deceased allege that she was beaten to death by her husband and members of his family. However, the husband has claimed that when he returned home this morning after attending a musical show, he found his wife hanging. He said he cut the rope and placed her body on a bed.
The couple had been married for nearly two years. According to the woman’s relatives, she had previously lodged several complaints with the Balagolla Police regarding continuous harassment and abuse by her husband, who they claim is addicted to drugs.
The relatives further stated that she frequently sought refuge at her parents’ home due to the assaults allegedly inflicted by her husband and had recently been preparing to seek a divorce.
Meanwhile, a letter said to have been written by the deceased woman has been handed over to the police and the Magistrate by the husband’s family. However, the woman’s relatives claim that the handwriting in the letter does not belong to her.
A tense situation arose at the scene during the Magistrate’s inquiry due to the conduct of some family members of the deceased.
The Magistrate subsequently ordered that the body be sent to the Kandy National Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Balagolla Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
