The Department of Meteorology has warned that as the southwest monsoon gradually establishes over the island, very heavy rainfall exceeding 200 mm may occur in some areas of the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North Western provinces.

The Department stated that the current rainy conditions affecting the southwestern parts of the island are expected to continue over the next few hours.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North Western provinces, as well as in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts.

Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is also expected in some areas of the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts, the Department of Meteorology said.

Several spells of rain are forecast for the Northern Province and the Anuradhapura District.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Uva Province and in the Batticaloa and Ampara districts after 2.00 p.m.

Moderately strong winds of 35–45 kmph may occur at times over the western slopes of the Central Highlands, and in the Northern, North Central, North Western and Southern provinces, as well as in the Trincomalee District.

The Department of Meteorology urged the public to take necessary precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary strong winds and lightning associated with thunderstorms.
