High-level trade discussions between Sri Lanka and the United States are set to begin on May 27 in Washington, as both nations work to deepen their economic cooperation. The talks will address export tariffs imposed on Sri Lankan goods, which have affected the island nation’s access to the U.S. market.
The Sri Lankan delegation will be led by Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning, Harshana Suriyapperuma. This marks the second round of such negotiations, highlighting the ongoing diplomatic engagement and commitment to enhancing bilateral trade relations.
The discussions are being hosted at the invitation of the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), the federal agency responsible for shaping and implementing U.S. international trade policy.
Sri Lanka is among several countries facing U.S. export tariffs, and the government has been actively working to ease these trade barriers. Earlier this month, a Sri Lankan delegation visited Washington for preliminary discussions with U.S. officials, laying the groundwork for this upcoming round of talks. The recent visit demonstrated Sri Lanka’s continued efforts to seek fairer trade conditions and boost economic cooperation with the United States.
