President Anura Kumara Dissanayake yesterday instructed officials to take all possible steps to make SriLankan Airlines a profitable entity.
The President also directed officials to present short-term and long-term solutions for managing the airline’s debt.
These instructions were given during a meeting between President Dissanayake and senior officials of SriLankan Airlines, held at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday (08) afternoon. This was the first time the President met with the top management of SriLankan Airlines after the government decided to retain the airline under state ownership, reversing the previous administration’s decision to privatize the national carrier.
Proposals to transform SriLankan Airlines into a more profitable state enterprise were discussed extensively during the meeting.
New investment opportunities were also considered. The President emphasized the need to take all possible measures to ensure the airline’s profitability.
The Presidential Media Unit stated that although SriLankan Airlines records operational profits, it remains one of the top state-owned enterprises incurring losses due to poor management decisions.
