The Election Commission will meet today (April 8) to discuss the latest developments regarding the local government elections and make a decision, Mawbima newspaper reports.

Election Commission member M.A.P.C. Perera told Mawbima that the Commission will convene this morning to decide the next steps following the court ruling on elections for several local government bodies, including the Colombo Municipal Council.

Following the Commission meeting, secretaries of ministries, heads of corporations, and board chairpersons will also be summoned to the Election Commission for further discussions.

Perera stated that due to the current situation, postal ballot papers were issued for only 114 local government institutions.

Meanwhile, the Commission announced that, because of the rejection of nominations for the upcoming local government elections and ongoing legal proceedings, postal ballot papers could not be issued for all other local government institutions yesterday (April 7).

The Election Commission had earlier scheduled elections for 339 local government bodies on May 6.

Several political parties and independent groups have filed court cases challenging the rejection of their nominations. Yesterday, the Court of Appeal, after considering the writ petitions, issued an interim order preventing the Election Commission from holding elections in several local government institutions, including the Colombo Municipal Council.
