Wildfires Claim 26 Lives, Thousands Evacuated
As of March 27, 2025, the death toll from the wildfires has risen to 26, with many more injured or displaced. The fires have consumed over 33,000 hectares in Uiseong County, making it the largest wildfire disaster in South Korea’s history. The flames have spread rapidly due to strong winds and dry conditions, prompting mass evacuations.
South Korea’s Acting President Han Duck-soo has described the situation as a national emergency, as over 120 helicopters and thousands of firefighters work to contain the infernos. Despite firefighting efforts, continued dry weather poses a major challenge.
Cultural Landmarks Destroyed
Among the tragic losses is Gounsa Temple, a 1,300-year-old Buddhist site, where 20 out of 30 buildings have been burned. However, firefighters managed to save a priceless **8th-century stone Buddha statue** and other historical artifacts.
Possible Cause: Human Negligence
Authorities suspect that the fires may have been started by human activities, such as burning dry grass. The Korea Forest Service has raised the wildfire alert to its highest level and urged extreme caution.
Advisory for Sri Lankans in South Korea
