The Vatican has released the first photograph of Pope Francis since his hospitalization on February 14, showing him in prayer after concelebrating Mass at the private chapel of Gemelli Hospital. The image, shared by the Holy See Press Office on Sunday evening, offers a reassuring sign of his recovery.
In the photo, the Pope is seen from behind, seated in a wheelchair, wearing a cassock and stole, as he looks at the crucifix on the altar. The Mass took place in the hospital’s tenth-floor chapel, where he has been praying daily as his health gradually improves.
Public Hopeful for a Glimpse of the Pope
For weeks, journalists and the public had been eager to see an updated image of the Pope, as his last public photos were taken before his hospitalization. Though he has remained out of sight, his voice was heard on March 6 in an audio message played during a Rosary gathering in St. Peter’s Square, where he blessed the faithful and expressed gratitude for their prayers.
On Sunday morning, around 200 children from UNICEF and other groups gathered outside Gemelli Hospital, holding flowers and balloons as a symbol of their affection for the Pope. They looked up at the hospital windows, hoping for a wave or a special greeting from him.
Recovery Continues with Prayer and Therapy
Pope Francis is following a structured routine of prayer, rest, and therapy, including respiratory treatment and physiotherapy, which have reportedly shown positive effects. His medical condition remains stable, though doctors still consider it “complex.” The Vatican has reduced the frequency of medical updates, but the Holy See Press Office continues to provide daily reports on his well-being.
On Sunday, the Pope did not receive visitors but continued with some work. In his Angelus reflection, he described this period as a “trial” and expressed solidarity with those who, like him, are experiencing moments of fragility due to illness.
Despite his health challenges, Pope Francis remains deeply connected with the faithful, carrying on his mission even from his hospital room.
