Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka on April 4 for a two-day official visit at the invitation of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake Daily Mirror reports. The invitation was extended during President Dissanayake’s state visit to New Delhi in December last year.

According to the news report during his visit, Prime Minister Modi will participate in the groundbreaking ceremony for a ground-mounted solar power project in Sampur, . This project is a collaborative effort between Sri Lanka’s Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and India’s National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC). The Sri Lankan Cabinet has already approved the power purchasing agreement, with the generated electricity set to be bought at a little over five US cents per unit. The solar power plant will have a capacity of 120 megawatts.

Energy cooperation is a key area of focus between the two nations, as highlighted in a joint statement following President Dissanayake’s visit to India. Both countries aim to enhance energy connectivity, including grid interconnection, to ensure reliable and affordable energy resources. Strengthening collaboration in the energy sector and ensuring the timely execution of ongoing projects remain priorities for both leaders.

Prime Minister Modi previously visited Sri Lanka in 2015 during his first term in office, where he discussed the potential for developing Trincomalee as a petroleum hub. In 2017, he returned to Sri Lanka to participate in the International Vesak Day celebrations.
