National People’s Power (NPP) Member of Parliament Nilanti Kottahachchi has complained with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) regarding a defamatory statement circulating on social media. The statement allegedly involves false claims about her relationships and alleged sexual misconduct.
The complaint was filed on her behalf by Attorney Namal Rajapaksa, who highlighted that the claims were both highly obscene and entirely false. According to Rajapaksa, the individual responsible is believed to be a political activist affiliated with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP). The suspect’s name, address, and phone number have reportedly been identified, and the attorney has requested that the CID take swift action to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrator.
A Controversial Political Figure
Attorney-at-law Nilanti Kottahachchi has been no stranger to controversy since she emerged as a prominent figure in the NPP. During her election campaign, she made waves with fiery accusations, claiming that her government would recover millions of rupees allegedly smuggled to Uganda by the Rajapaksa family. While the Rajapaksas strongly denied the allegations and demanded evidence, Kottahachchi eventually backed down from the claims.
The incident, however, earned her widespread attention, with social media dubbing her “Uganda Kumari.” Later, she controversially stated that “people have a right to lie,” adding fuel to debates over her political tactics and credibility.
Call for Justice
In this latest case, MP Kottahachchi’s legal team is pressing for accountability and justice against the spread of misinformation on social media at time when the online safety bill printed by the previous government is still been questioned by many including the NPP
