Indika Sampath Merenchige, Chairman of the Vehicle Importers Association, announced today that vehicle imports will recommence in February under the new government’s policy framework. Speaking at a press conference in Colombo, he affirmed that the government has committed to allowing vehicle imports and plans to hold discussions with the President to finalize the details.

“We will be able to import vehicles from February as the government has assured us this as part of its policy,” Merenchige stated. “This will allow us to provide quality vehicles to the people at reasonable prices.”

He further explained that a committee appointed by the Ministry of Finance is currently formulating a policy to facilitate vehicle imports. He also noted that the Central Bank has agreed to allocate the necessary funds for imports once they commence.

Additionally, he highlighted that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has also approved the move, paving the way for the resumption of vehicle imports.
