Police have advised the public to be cautious about advertisements on social media promoting the sale of luxury vehicles and vehicle registration certificates at unusually low prices. DIG Nihal Talduwa, Police Media Spokesperson, announced that an investigation has begun into Facebook accounts advertising the sale of illegally assembled vehicles and registration documents at discounted rates.
DIG Talduwa shared this information in response to a journalist’s question during the Cabinet press briefing held at the Government Information Department yesterday (29). He urged the public to report any relevant information by calling the dedicated number, 1997.
“Currently, vehicles and their registration documents are being posted for sale on Facebook and other social media platforms. We are studying these cases separately, and investigation teams are actively working on them. The Acting Inspector General of Police has instructed us to prioritize this issue,” DIG Talduwa stated.
He also mentioned that vehicles have already been seized under these circumstances and assured that further special investigations will be conducted. The 1997 hotline was introduced to assist with such reports, and intelligence and investigative officers from relevant police divisions are monitoring social media for suspicious posts. Additionally, special focus is being placed on identifying illegally assembled vehicles.
According to police sources, recent government efforts to crack down on unregistered and illegally assembled vehicles have led some individuals to attempt selling them at reduced prices through social media.
