Dinasena Rathugamage :
B. Arianethran has been appointed today (8) as the Tamil common candidate for the presidential election.
He was elected in a special discussion convened in Jaffna by the representatives of seven Tamil political parties in alliance in the north.
There were three nominations submitted to be selected, and B. Ariyanethran has been elected as the Tamil common candidate for the election.
The Ilankei Tamil Arusu Katchi Party (ITAK) and Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam’s Tamil National People’s Front (TNPF) are not included in the seven alliance parties.
The alliance of the seven parties was formed on the strong desire of the former Chief Minister of the Northern Provincial Council, CV Vigneswaran.
A number of Tamil parties pointed out that it is a futile matter for a Tamil common candidate to be nominated for the presidential election, Mr. Wigneswaran said that even if he could not win, this opportunity is a very good opportunity to show the power of the Tamil people.
