Amid soaring tensions in the Middle East, the United States has urged its citizens in Lebanon to leave the country immediately, using any available means of transportation. This urgent advisory comes as the situation in the region continues to deteriorate, with heightened risks to personal safety.
The United States Embassy in Beirut issued a comprehensive advisory, emphasizing the critical nature of the situation. The advisory noted that several airlines have suspended or canceled flights to and from Lebanon, and many flights are already fully booked due to the high demand. Despite these disruptions, commercial transportation options remain available, and citizens are strongly encouraged to secure any available tickets, even if these do not align with their preferred travel routes or schedules.
“We encourage those who wish to depart Lebanon to book any ticket available to them, even if that flight does not depart immediately or does not follow their first-choice route,” the Embassy stated, underlining the urgency of the matter.
The advisory also addressed the issue of financial constraints faced by some U.S. citizens. The Embassy reassured that those lacking the necessary funds to return to the United States can contact the embassy for financial assistance through repatriation loans. This measure aims to ensure that financial limitations do not hinder citizens from leaving Lebanon promptly.
Moreover, the Embassy recommended that U.S. citizens who choose not to depart Lebanon prepare comprehensive contingency plans for emergency situations. It advised them to be ready to shelter in place for an extended period, highlighting the unpredictability of the situation.
“U.S. military-assisted evacuations of civilians from a foreign country are rare. U.S. citizens should not rely on the U.S. government for assisted departure or evacuation in a crisis,” the advisory added, stressing the importance of self-reliance in such scenarios.
The Embassy also provided specific guidelines for a potential evacuation scenario. It warned that in the case of an evacuation, citizens might not be able to leave with their extended family members, and pets would not be permitted. Furthermore, those evacuated would be expected to reimburse the U.S. government for their transportation to a safe location. The responsibility for the costs of onward travel from that safe location to the United States would also fall on the evacuated individuals.
The advisory concluded by urging citizens to stay informed and prepared for any developments. “We strongly advise U.S. citizens in Lebanon to maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to ensure their safety,” it stated.
In a parallel move, both the Australian and United Kingdom governments have issued similar travel advisories to their citizens in Lebanon, reflecting the widespread concern over the escalating situation in the region. These advisories underscore the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for citizens to heed the warnings and take prompt action to ensure their safety.
