Former President Maithripala Sirisena has sent a letter of demand to Minister Mahinda Amaraweera demanding compensation of 1000 million rupees against a statement made about him.

Referring to a minister’s media interview, the former president has informed that if the compensation is not paid within 14 days, a lawsuit will be filed to collect the amount and legal interest on it.

Lawyer Jayamudita Jayasuriya has stated in the same interview that the comments expressed by the minister on April 22, 2024, regarding his client Maithripala Sirisena are false. Sirisena who has been active in politics for almost 50 years as the president of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and who held the office of the President of the Republic of Sri Lanka claims that Minister Amaraweera has harmed his honor by making statements to a television channel on April 22, 2024, and a newspaper on April 24, 2024. It has been mentioned in the interview.

“Yesterday a meeting was held only by gathering a group of rascals. It is completely illegal. Also insulting the court, there is no possibility for Mr. Maithripala Sirisena to be involved. Acting Secretary Dushmantha Mithrapala has insulted the court. We are going to go to court in this regard in the future. Also, the security team appointed for the protection of former presidents has completely intervened in yesterday’s illegal meeting. A group was not allowed to come, they were threatened. The former chairman of the party is now auctioning this party. Recently, he met one of the most powerful businessmen in Sri Lanka who was announced to be seeking the presidential candidacy. What is his request at that time? Ask him to give him a hundred million to compete. We asked him whether such a meeting took place when he met the former chairman of the party. He accepted it. Professor Rohana Lakshman said that because there are people in the government who accused us. I don’t know if he is wearing clothes now, he is sitting in the professorship and talking. Now not a minister is appointed. How many times have you met the professor to suggest this matter? How much did the one who confirmed this get? It is a problem for the people of the country that the Minister of Justice is sitting next to a person who has four hundred cases, we ask ourselves.” The minister’s statement is quoted in the interlude.
