A tense situation unfolded in Malwatu Hiripitiya as a group of police officers attempted to inspect a suspicious three-wheeler passing through Batepola town. The incident occurred when officers from the Malwatu Hiripitiya Police sought to apprehend a suspicious individual associated with the vehicle.
In an attempt to evade capture, the suspect engaged in a scuffle with the officers, resulting in a firearm being discharged from the hand of a police sergeant. Despite the discharge, the suspect managed to flee from the scene, reportedly seizing the fired firearm before fleeing in the three-wheeler.
Tragically, a sergeant sustained injuries during the altercation and subsequent firearm discharge. Following initial treatment at Gampaha District General Hospital, the injured officer was transferred to Colombo National Hospital for further medical attention.
Authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident, aiming to apprehend the suspect and recover the stolen firearm.
