Rosha Shamali, a resident of Kandy, is seeking the intervention of the relevant authorities to grant her and her eleven-year-old son a visa to Italy to do the final burial rites of her husband, Sampath Chandana Veerakkodi, a former army captain, who passed away suddenly in Italy under suspicious circumstances.
The grieving widow shared that her husband’s body has been kept in a funeral home in Italy for nearly ten months, incurring a daily burial rent of 18,000 rupees, amounting to a total of nearly sixty lakh rupees. Despite the financial strain, she emphasizes the urgency of being granted a visa to perform the last rites in Italy.
The widow received information about her husband’s sudden death on April 21, 2023, while he was employed in Italy. Expressing the difficulties in obtaining a visa, she stresses that embassy officials seem to be concerned that she and her son intend to stay in Italy. She emphasizes the suspicious nature of her husband’s death and expresses the desire to conduct a post-mortem and perform the last rites in Italy.
Nirosha Shamali earnestly appeals to the President, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and other relevant authorities to facilitate her and her son’s journey to Italy for the final farewell to her deceased husband.
