A 34-year-old lance corporal from the Polonnaruwa Welikanda Kandakadu army camp lost his life after being attacked by a wild elephant at around 2:10 am today (26). The deceased, identified as PA Lalith, was a father of two and a resident of the Anamaduwa area.
According to Welikanda Police, the attack occurred during duty when the wild elephant entered the area with mango trees through a fence. The police are currently investigating the incident. The body of the lance corporal has been placed in the Welikanda hospital, with a post-mortem scheduled for later in the afternoon.
Polonnaruwa Senior Superintendent of Police Nishan de Silva reported that a team of police officers, led by Welikanda Police Station Inspector Samantha Ratnayake under the guidance of Assistant Superintendent of Police Sudath Asmadala, is actively conducting further investigations into the incident.
