The Government Medical Officers’ Associationhas announced a boycott of medical clinics organized by politicians in anticipation of upcoming elections. This decision is part of a trade union action taken by doctors, including their withdrawal from elite ambulance services.

The association’s secretary, Dr. Haritha Aluthge, has reported an influx of phone calls from various elite sectors due to the suspension of doctors’ participation in elite ambulance services. This increase in inquiries is linked to the arrival of foreign government officials in Sri Lanka and the demand for ambulance services for long-distance travel for elite individuals.

Dr. Aluthge stated that the union’s executive council has unanimously agreed to persist with the trade union action until their demands are met, regardless of the volume of calls received from the elite.

As Sri Lanka prepares for upcoming presidential and general elections, some political leaders have organized medical clinics in their constituencies. The union’s decision not to participate in these clinics reflects their ongoing trade union action and underscores their commitment to their demands.
