An individual who posed as a tourist guide and stole, from an Australian woman in Galle city was apprehended yesterday (19) according to Galle police.
The suspect, a 22-year-old resident of Galle Kanampitiya district, was arrested and revealed to be a person addicted to drugs.
The incident involved a foreign woman and her husband who had arrived in Sri Lanka on the 12th and were staying in a Koggala area hotel. Yesterday (19) afternoon, they visited Galle city where the suspect, pretending to be a tourist guide, accompanied them to various shops.
After shopping, the foreign woman’s husband sought a haircut and was taken to a hair cutting place in Kekiribokka area. Meanwhile, the suspect took the woman to a sewing place, where he discreetly stole her handbag containing 50 dollars, 51,250 in Sri Lankan rupees and a pair of glasses worth 37,000 rupees.
Police apprehended the suspect and recovered the stolen property, including 15,120 rupees, and the pair of glasses.
The suspect is slated to be presented in court.
The arrest was carried out by a team of officers led by D.G. Ananda, Station Officer of the Crime Division of Galle Police.
