Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella has requested the Speaker to take necessary steps to postpone the debate on the 20th Amendment to the Constitution to be held this week.
Addressing a letter to the Speaker, he pointed out that the social distancing must be protected if the debate is to be held in accordance with gazetted regulations.
The Chief Opposition Whip points out that the manner in which Members of Parliament sit is contrary to government regulations and that holding Parliament when it is restricted to hold meetings is also against those rules.
In his letter to the Speaker, he has asked what example the country would set if the legislature itself violated the law.
