The officials of the Government Survey Department faced obstruction while attempting to survey land in Mullian village, located in the eastern part of Jaffna, to allocate one and a half acres of land for the Navy’s use, yesterday (24).

A group of Tamil politicians, including Selvathurai Gajendran MP of Janata Peramuna and several members of the Northern Provincial Council, hindered the surveyors by stopping their vehicle and issuing threats, forcing them to retreat.

The incident was reported to the department heads by the survey officers in Jaffna, who were unable to carry out their duties due to the obstruction. However, no formal complaint was lodged with the local police regarding the incident.

The Navy had requested the government for the one-and-a-half-acre land area to expand its existing camp in the region. After obtaining approval from the Jaffna District Governor and the District Land Officer, the surveying officers were tasked with measuring and dividing the land. However, they were met with intimidation and verbal abuse during their attempt to carry out the survey.
