Member of Parliament Wimal Weerawansa made an appearance in court today (21) following the issuance of warrants for his arrest.

The Colombo Magistrate’s Court had issued these warrants on the 19th, citing Weerawansa’s failure to attend court proceedings.

Accompanying Weerawansa in the case was another defendant, Weerakumara Dissanayake, who also failed to appear in court on the designated day. Dissanayake’s lawyer submitted a medical report on his behalf, explaining his absence. On the other hand, Members of Parliament Mohammad Mussammil, Jayantha Samaraweera, as well as Roger Seneviratne and Piyasiri Wijenayake, representing the National Freedom Front, attended the court session.

The case, filed in 2016, stems from allegations that Weerawansa caused public oppression by blocking roads and staging protests in front of the United Nations office in Colombo during the visit of the United Nations Human Rights Commissioner, Prince Said Al Hussain.
