The Central Bank of Sri Lanka reports that by the end of 2022, about 68 per cent of the country’s population had resorted to alternative food strategies such as reducing the volume of food intake by reducing the number of meals and relying on less palatable foods.
Based on the remote, household, and food security survey data of the World Food Program, the Central Bank states that 85 per cent of the population has resorted to borrowing money, reducing expenses for education and health, spending savings, and postponing debt payments.
The tragedy is that the central bank report revealed that about 40 percent of the country’s expenditure on education and health has been cut.
Also, this survey report has shown that most of the employed are working in the informal sector.
The central bank report states that the pressure of the economic crisis can be aggravated by the fact that 14.3 percent of the world’s population lives below the poverty line, which can cause a large number of people to fall into poverty.
