Tragedy Strikes as Dunith Wellalage’s Father Passes Away During Afghanistan Match

Dunith Wellalage’s father, Suranga Wellalage, has passed away following a sudden heart attack.

The tragedy occurred while Suranga was watching the final match between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan on television. During the game, Mohammad Nabi heavily attacked Dunith’s bowling, striking him for five sixes in his last over.

Under immense emotional strain, Suranga experienced severe chest pain and was rushed to the hospital, but sadly, he could not be saved.

This heartbreaking incident has sent shockwaves through the cricketing community, as young Dunith Wellalage is regarded as one of Sri Lanka’s brightest future stars.

Sri Lanka went on to successfully chase a target of 170 runs, winning the match by six wickets with eight balls to spare.  Suranga Wellalage himself was a talented cricketer in his youth, having captained the Prince of Wales College team in the mid-1980s.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi has expressed his condolences following the sudden passing of Sri Lankan cricketer Dunith Wellalage’s father, Suranga Wellalage.

Sharing his sympathy on X, Nabi wrote:
“Heartfelt condolences to Dunith Wellalage and his family on the loss of his beloved father. Stay strong, Brother.”*

 

Mohammad Nabi’s message has brought support from many in Sri Lanka and beyond. Former teammates, cricket fans, and sports personalities have all expressed their deepest sympathies to Dunith Wellalage and his family.

Many have said they are praying for comfort and peace for them during this very sad time. In the days ahead, Dunith plans to take a short break from international cricket to be with his family. Friends, teammates and fans hope this time will help him heal.
