A giant wild elephant was killed after being hit by a Batticaloa-bound train early this morning at Gallalla, Polonnaruwa. According to wildlife officials, the incident occurred around 5.30 am today (18) while the elephant was roaming in the area.
Several eyewitnesses said the elephant fell onto the main road near a house after being struck by the train. One person recorded a video on their mobile phone showing the injured elephant crossing the road in critical condition after the collision.
A tense situation arose when a person attempted to remove hair from the tail of the dead elephant in front of bystanders. Wildlife officials intervened, leading to a heated argument between them and the individual.
Residents said the elephant frequently visited nearby villages, often eating paddy and causing damage. One villager stated that the elephant had been roaming the area since 3 am today and that their attempts to contact wildlife officials were unsuccessful as calls were disconnected.
According to wildlife officials, the elephant was approximately 15 years old and about 8 feet tall.
