Tushara Williams Becomes the First Deputy Minister of Sri Lankan Origin in Canada

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has appointed Tushara Williams, a woman of Sri Lankan origin, as the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs for the Government of Canada, effective from the 19th.

This historic appointment makes Williams the first woman of Sri Lankan origin to hold a Deputy Minister position in the Canadian government.

Born in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Williams completed her primary and secondary education at Colombo Women’s College before immigrating to Canada in 1991. She pursued her higher education at the University of Toronto, where she obtained a BA in International Relations and a Masters in Global Development Studies.

Prior to her appointment, Williams briefly worked at the Institute of Policy Studies in Sri Lanka after completing her Master’s degree. She then joined the Canadian Civil Service in 2001, where she garnered extensive experience in various sectors such as social, economic, and financial domains.
